I hate Flatwater

I hate that it arrives so slowly and departs so quickly.
and that it reminds me of how many years I wasted with the wrong gauge and barrel orientation
and how I couldn't mount a gun or hit a moving target
and the friends I so seldom see who remind me I still can't.
I hate that everyone can't enjoy the hospitality of Brotherman and Miss Connie that I've been smothered in for years.
and that this is the last year in the Tiny Suite
and that Scapa is getting older
and that so are we.
I hate that some who have attended in the past have not made it back
and that some never will
even if they wanted to.
I hate it when Voss and Hinck are right
and that it is so frequent
and painful
and that I now prefer my steak intentionally charred and crunchy, with a cool, bright purple filling.
I hate it that I did not meet these men
and their dogs
and their guns
decades ago.
I hate Flatwater.
But for all the right reasons, all the best reasons.
