Flatwater Photos

#1 Post by wingshooter »

There are 341 on the camera, so it's going to take a while to sort through and post the better ones. Some will be out of chronological order, but I want to get some up. Jim H agreed to use his early Joseph Manton flintlock in the opening ceremony of Flatwater VI, as long as I cleaned it. Some of you know what a price I paid. It was of course appropriate that the Committee open the festivities, and here a few shots thereof. I had the camera on video mode, and I may try to post a link. I will add photos as time allows, and feel free to take any for a caption contest.

The 30 mph wind had blown all the priming compund out of the right barrel's priming well. So when the left went off it was a small victory.

A contrast in competence:

Shooter #1 has good form, head still down on the stock. Shooter #2 does not have the leading hand sufficiently extended, and has lifted his head even before the smoke has cleared. Shooter #2 does get style/fashion points however.

This sent to me from someone who actually knows what he's talking about:

"Just looked as some of your pictures and thought you might be interested to know that the proper form (as evidenced by old shooting prints) for shooting these old guns is to have the leading hand right in front of the trigger guard. Presumably this is to save the hand if the barrels go."

By Saturday the temp had dropped 20 degrees, and many of us braved some light sprinkles to shoot. Stew had an ad hoc cleaning station set up and saved our butts (and barrels) with his bore snake- provided you were
shooting a 16. :D

I told Moats we were low on grub and he would have to go get some take out. I always appreciate his strict adherence to the fundamentals of gun safety.

I read an article in Sporting Clays Magazine by a guy named Moats that said John Wooley recommended keeping both eyes open.
